Mother-Infant Bonding

What is this study about?
This study explores the relationship between a mother and her infant. Currently we are running a project which offers new mothers three mother and baby sessions providing information on infant development, connecting with their babies and in some cases baby massage. These sessions are offered concurrently with the delivery of a natural hormone spray or placebo which is aimed at increasing the bond you feel towards your baby.

What will the information be used for?

Information from this study will be used to help mothers who may be experiencing difficulties in the postnatal period, particularly postpartum depression. Furthermore, research on the effects of the natural hormone spray will help elucidate its role within the body, particularly through calming mechanisms and social interactions. It is important to know that in any publication or report, information will be provided in such a way that you cannot be identified.

You will be eligible if you:
  • Are experiencing some degree of difficulty in the postpartum period.
  • You do not need to be diagnosed with depression. As a new mother you may feel tired, stressed and overwhelmed. Things may not feel ?quite right?.
What would I need to do?
Research participation involves three visits to the University of New South Wales (located just up the road from the Royal Hospital for Women and Prince of Wales Hospital, Randwick). Sessions involve completing questionnaires, watching a video on infant development, playing with your baby and receiving either oxytocin or placebo nasal spray. A medical practitioner will assess your suitability for participating in the project and before agreeing to participate you may ask any questions you have.
